At St John Henry Newman School we offer a high-quality physical education curriculum in both Key Stage 3 and 4, which we hope will inspire all pupils to take part in regular physical activity and have opportunities to excel in competitive sport. We would like all pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness; whilst benefiting from personal, social and emotional development. The broad and balanced curriculum provides pupils the opportunity to determine their interests and talents and we hope this will lead them to remaining physically active into adulthood and throughout their life.
At Key Stage 4 many pupils opt to study GCSE PE. They will be supported in their study of the Edexcel GCSE PE course by a team of staff with excellent subject knowledge, varied teaching and learning styles and a passion for the subject. With high expectations of the pupils the department has achieved excellent results.
In Key Stage 5 some pupils will continue their academic study of physical education by following a BTEC Level 3 in Sport course in Years 12 and 13.
We offer a wide range of extra-curricular sports and encourage all pupils to come along and further develop their skills, fitness, and performance. Commitment to attend after school clubs and training sessions will help pupils to improve and have opportunities to represent the school in competitive fixtures/events and some pupils will progress to represent the district and county.
If you have any queries regarding PE or school sport, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
Adrian Irving
Head of Physical Education

In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils will gain in confidence and develop their techniques across a range of sports and physical activity. They will understand what makes a performance effective and how to analyse their own and others work. Pupils will be encouraged to take part in sport and physical activity out of school; they will understand that regular physical activity contributes to a healthy, active lifestyle with many long term health benefits.
This is an academically and practically demanding course. Pupils need to sustain an interest in learning the theoretical components of the course in addition to showing the commitment needed to develop their performance in a range of sports.
