Excitement as pupils and staff celebrate new beginnings for Catholic secondary school in Carlisle

On 3 September 2020 staff and pupils started a new academic year in the brand-new building of St John Henry Newman Catholic School.

The new building and campus, located on Scalegate Road in Carlisle, is a multi-million pound investment involving a range of partners including the Department for Education, the Diocese of Lancaster and Cumbria County Council.

The school's Headteacher, John McAuley, believes that the impressive new facilities will give pupils nothing but the best school experience. The indoor sports hall has the latest design of sprung hardwood floor and the outdoor sport facilities include pitches, a cricket square and MUGA.Multiple science labs have the latest bespoke equipment, and ICT suites and laptop facilities are located on every floor to enhance learning. The sixth form block has separate dining facilities and has separate study and social areas.

"We are now able to provide our pupils with a Catholic school fit for the 21st Century which includes specialist subject classrooms and a spacious sports hall with a sprung timber floor. We also have a large, landscaped campus with some of the finest views in Carlisle over the city, Scotland and the Pennines.

"Apart from state-of-the-art teaching areas, our pupils will also benefit from a modern chapel, which is at the heart of the school building and inspired by the Newman Oratory.Large, airy communal areas include a theatre with Bleacher seating, a well-resourced library and food service in the San Lorenzo restaurant.

"This will allow us to deliver a rich and varied curriculum for pupils from Year 7 to sixth form.Every one of our pupils will be able to access a learning environment and extensive opportunities to enable them to thrive and succeed.

"The contractor Galliford Try spent considerable time in the design and construction of the new school to ensure the project was completed to schedule and to the highest specification."

Andy Abernethy, Chair of Governors commented on this significant milestone for the school:

"This is a great day for the pupils and staff of Newman and for the wider community in Carlisle. The school has come through many challenges over recent years, most significantly the flooding of our city centre site and working in temporary accommodation.

"We are now looking to the future and to exciting new beginnings on a journey of improvement. The new building will provide an excellent learning environment for all of our pupils."
